Gears of War first burst on to the first-person shooter scene in 2006 bringing plenty of bloody chainsaw kills and fandom with it. Since then, the series has been a mainstay on the Xbox consoles and proved to be a very valuable franchise. The move to a turn-based tactic game with Gears Tactics looks to have excited fans, particularly those who wanted a change of pace after the fifth installment in the franchise.

The developer of the game, The Coalition, let it’s head RodFerguson answer the queries about microtransactions. Ferguson stated that the game “is single player and has no microtransactions”. This will likely put fans at ease after the Gears Tactics trailer teased an incredible amount of customization, a feature that usually comes at a cost to players. The most recent title from The Coalition, Gears 5, has received consistent updates and if Gears Tactics gets the same treatment it could be a very successful game and a solid addition to a beloved franchise.
While Gears 5 had issues with its online gameplay at its inception, its campaign impressed and the upcoming Gears Tactics looks to do the same. Set at the beginning of the Locust War, players are tasked with destroying the creator of the “monsters”. With the developer seemingly learning from the previous errors that arose in Gears 5, players may have a game that is a hit from the start with the upcoming Gears title.
The single-player gameplay of Gears Tactics will likely satisfy those who want to fight locusts but have had enough of one of the best multiplayer games of 2019. In an industry where games are increasingly based around online multiplayer mechanics and microtransactions, Gears Tactics may be a refreshing way to entice players. Although it is dangerous to deviate from market trends, the Gears franchise could likely withstand the experiment and most importantly thrive on the back of it.
Gears Tactics releases on the Microsoft Store, Steam, and Xbox Game Pass for PC on April 28, 2020.
