CG Technology moved the Jets from 3.5-point home favorites vs. the Browns in Week 1 to -3 (with varying degrees of juice). The Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook went from -3.5 to -3 (-120).
Jets QB situation: Time to move Smith anyway? | Vick not the answer
While a point spread shifting from 3.5 to 3 can be a big deal in the NFL, a team losing its starting signal-caller typically warrants a much larger move.
Two more Jets games on the Westgate’s Games of the Year board figure to be impacted by Smith’s injury — Monday, Sept. 15 at Indy and Sunday, Oct. 4 vs. the Dolphins in London. Miami was adjusted from -3.5 to -4 at the Westgate, while the Colts were left alone at -8.5.
The Jets’ win total was adjusted from 7.5 to 7 at CG, while the Westgate stayed put at 7.5, only reducing the juice on OVER from -130 to -120.
“Literally nothing,” SuperBook manager Ed Salmons said of Smith’s impact.
“Zero,” The Linemakers’ Kenny White replied when asked what the difference to the betting line is from Smith to Ryan Fitzpatrick, who figures to get the starting nod in Smith’s absence.
Said The Linemakers’ Micah Roberts, “Basically, Smith is worth nothing to the number, and if you can find a book that overreacts and moves below -3, you should lay it with the Jets. This awful event in the locker room (Smith’s broken jaw resulted from a punch by a teammate) could turn out to be a good thing in 2015 for the Jets simply because Fitzpatrick is better."

“You could argue that the Jets should be favored more than -3.5 in Week 1 because you know Fitzpatrick isn’t as much a risk to make the bad throw in key moments as Smith is,” Micah added.
Salmons isn’t impressed with either of the Jets’ first two options at QB.
“I don’t like Fitzpatrick, I think he’s terrible,” Salmons said. “But Smith is a turnover machine, always has been. The new coach would have learned that. … Both of them are the same. At times (Fitzpatrick) looks decent and then he turns the ball over for no reason — that’s just how he’s always played."
Salmons, in fact, said Smith’s injury may have its biggest effect on the Jets’ preseason game Thursday vs. the Lions.
“That’s probably the most important thing in all of this because they’ll be a quarterback short the first week,” said Salmons, whose book adjusted the line from Detroit -3 to -3.5.
