Smith’s absence follows a win over the Dolphins to close out the season, in which he completed 20 of 25 passes for 358 yards and three touchdowns. Last week, he told reporters that he would like to remain the team’s starter heading into next season.
“I see myself being the quarterback here for a long time,” Smith said on Wednesday. “I see myself helping this team turn things around. Obviously, I’m a part of the reason why we’re in this position, so I’d love to be part of the solution.”
Earlier Monday, Jets owner Woody Johnson announced Ryan and Idzik had been fired.
Smith began his second NFL season as the Jets’ starter, but was benched in favor of backup Michael Vick during a Week 8 loss to the Bills. He resumed starting duties in Week 13 and finished the season with 2,525 yards, 13 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
In all, Smith went 3-10 as a starter this season, completing 59.7 percent of his passes.
The Jets hold the sixth pick in this year’s draft after finishing 4-12.
