Smith lit up a porous Lions defense Sunday, passing for 320 yards and two touchdowns in a 48-45 victory. He also rushed for 49 yards and another score on seven carries.
And it wasn’t just Smith. The entire offense clicked (Seattle didn’t punt once in the game) as the Seahawks racked up their second win of the season.
“Geno played spectacular football, spectacular football,” Seattle coach Pete Carroll said after the game. “Not just the throwing and the catching, but the command of the game and running the whole show, he did an incredible job, and he ran the ball, too, for 50 yards or something. Fantastic day, I don’t know how you can do a whole lot more, play a whole lot better than that.”

Seattle displays rare pass-run balance
Smith became the fifth quarterback this season to pass for at least 300 yards and rush for at least 40, joining Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, Jalen Hurts and Lamar Jackson, according to Stathead. Jackson’s Week 2 performance against the Dolphins is the only other game where the quarterback had no turnovers and produced both a passing and rushing touchdown.
It wasn’t just Smith’s play that stood out. The entire Seahawks run game clicked, with 235 yards and three touchdowns on 33 carries. According to Stathead, that performance was only the 31st game since 2010 in which a team tallied at least 300 passing yards and 200 rushing yards. It was only the 17th time a team has racked up 300 passing yards, 200 rushing yards and multiple touchdowns both on the ground and threw the air.

Rashad Penny, DK Metcalf show out
What helps a team have a balanced attack? Getting a lot of production from both its top running back and top wide receiver. On Sunday, running back Rashaad Penny and wide receiver DK Metcalf went off.
Penny rushed 17 times for 151 yards and two touchdowns while Metcalf caught seven passes for 149 yards. According to data from Stathead, this marked just the 34th time in NFL history that teammates had at least 150 rushing yards and 149 receiving yards.
The most recent occurrence was Oct. 10, 2021, when Browns tight end David Njoku caught seven passes for 149 yards and running back Nick Chubb rushed for 161 yards on 21 carries against the Chargers.

Seattle did not punt
It should be no surprise that when a team puts up that many points and racks up that many yards that there would be few punts.
It isn’t often that teams finish games without a punt. Since 2010, just 53 teams have completed a game without punting once, per Stathead. The Seahawks had never before finished a game without punting.

One of the best scoring days in franchise history
Any time a team scores 48 points in the NFL, it’s going to draw attention. That is certainly the case for Seattle’s performance Sunday.
The outburst tied for the seventh-most points scored by Seattle in a regular-season contest, according to Stathead. It was the 431st time a team has scored at least 48 points.
The more striking stat here, however, is the combined scoring of the two teams. Seattle and Detroit combined for 93 points. According to Stathead, it is just the 37th time two teams have combined to score that many points.

Geno Smith vs. Russell Wilson
It wasn’t enough for Smith and the Seahawks to beat their former franchise quarterback in Week 1. Seattle’s offense has been far more impressive to this point than the Broncos’ offense under Wilson in 2022.
In Sunday’s game alone, Smith accounted for more touchdowns than Wilson had all season prior to the Broncos’ Week 4 game against the Raiders. Wilson had passed for two touchdowns all year; Smith rushed for one and passed for two against Detroit.
Smith entered the matchup with 717 yards and four touchdowns passing, a 77.5 completion percentage, two interceptions, and 10 rushes for 15 yards. Wilson, by comparison, came into Week 4 with 743 passing yards, two touchdowns, one pick, a 59.4 completion percentage and nine rushes for 22 yards.
In Sunday’s game alone, the Seahawks scored more points than the Broncos had scored all season. Denver had scored 43 points through the first three weeks.
