Updated May 18, 2021 by Mina Smith: Now that much more detailed information is known about the locations and behaviors of Unusual Hilichurls, this guide was in need of an overhaul. There was speculation at the original time of publishing of some information that has been more firmly nailed down, and so this article has been updated with all that new information.
What are Unusual Hilichurls in Genshin Impact?
Ever since update 1.1, Genshin Impact players have been seeing some very weird-looking hilichurls around. While defeating these Unusual Hilichurls only gives players 233 Mora currency, 18 Adventure Experience, and 1 to 3 heads of cabbage, killing several will earn players achievements and some free Primogems to boot.

These hilichurls are carrying around suitcases and are non-aggressive. They will not attack unless a player damages them first, and their names don’t show up in Elemental Vision. Once attacked, these weird critters are labeled as “Unusual Hilichurl” with the subtitle “Menace of the Mansion.” Oddly enough, they throw weaponized Primogems at players along with two other unusual attacks:
Suitcase Knock Back (Melee). Primogems and Cabbages as Damage Projectiles (Ranged). Homu Doll Toss (Ranged).
The Unusual Hilichurl is based on a self-inserted character based on miHoYo’s Liu Wei, who is the founder of the company; they throw leafy greens as a reference to Honkai Impact 3’s mascot whose hair looks a little like a head of cabbage. Even the Homu doll is a throwback to one of the company’s earlier titles. And along with these Unusual Hilichurls different appearances and strange antics, they also have some beefed-up powers; these hilichurls cannot be frozen or petrified. They are common enemies that have a very strange way of spawning.
Unusual Hilichurl Locations and Times
Unusual Hilichurls can spawn in 16 total locations at any time of the day. While most players assumed they spawned at certain locations on a timer, this does not appear to be the case. There are 8 possible locations in the Liyue area and 8 more in the historic and storied city of Mondstadt. Once players find one and defeat it, another will spawn in one of the other 15 locations.
When that second one is killed, there will be a 12-hour cooldown on the next hilichurl spawn. There is only one Unusual Hilichurl in any world at any given time. Although players can farm these hilichurls in Genshin Impact’s co-op mode, there is a limit to 10 kills per day in all worlds and still receive drops.
The possible Unusual Hilichurl Mondstadt locations are:
North East of Cape Oath at the very edge of the cliff. By the waypoint in Dadaupa Gorge. Next to a Shrine of Depths in the Stormbearer Mountains. First in Wolvendom: the North of Arena. Second in Wolvendom: Entrance of the Arena. First at the big tree in Windrise: To the left of the Statue of the Seven. Second at the big tree in Windrise: To the right of the Statue of the Seven. Southwest of the archon statue on a bridge near Stormterror’s Lair.
The possible Unusual Hilichurl Liyue Locations are:
A mountain northeast of Liyue Harbor. Qingyun Peak teleporter. The Flower Fields of Qingce Village . Tianqiu Valley west of closest teleporter. Cuijue Slope. Lingju Pass near the teleporter. Mingyun Village near the Statue of the Seven. Just east of the Stone Gate teleporter.
Getting the Achievement …Well That Was Strange
Killing one of these Unusual Hilichurls in Genshin Impact will reward players with the completed achievement …Well That Was Strange, giving them 5 Primogems for their efforts. Continuing to kill the masked goblins levels up this achievement, giving players another 10 Primogems for 20 killed and 20 Primogems for 50 killed. While the cabbage isn’t worth the effort of tracking these weird critters down and fighting them, the achievements and free Primogems just may be.
Finding these Unusual Hilichurls can be extremely time consuming and difficult. Players may just want to go about their business in Genshin Impact, completing bounties and quests, and just keep an eye out for these strange creatures while wandering the map.
Genshin Impact is available for mobile, PC, PS4, and PS5.
