Rosaria’s Violent Childhood in Genshin Impact
Rosaria of Genshin Impact was born in an unspecified village nestled in a remote mountain. Early in her childhood, however, this village was ransacked by bandits, who took the lives of everyone there — except her. The bandits took Rosaria in and raised her, teaching her how to fight and steal. Despite her tender age, Rosaria managed to live among these outlaws. She grew accustomed to hard labor and unscrupulous acts, as these were necessary for her to survive.
That said, life as a bandit was difficult. She quarreled with both enemies and comrades. Moreover, food was scarce, so Rosaria barely got to eat. To top it all off, the weather was cold and unforgiving, making it difficult to even find comfort in sleep. On one freezing night, the young Rosaria had had enough. She decided to leave the band of outlaws.
Though Rosaria managed to get away, one of the older bandits followed her and brought her back. This man was the one who took her from the village and taught her how to kill. Upon returning, he threw a dagger at Rosaria’s feet and told her that fleeing had made her into a traitor. Thus, to earn her freedom, she had to defeat him in combat. To everyone’s surprise, she did.
It was then that the bandits lost one member and accepted a new one. That same night, Rosaria acquired her Cryo Vision in Genshin Impact, making her a useful ally for the band of outlaws. With it, the bandits were far more welcoming of her. Still, Rosaria had a lingering question about the old bandit, wondering if he let her replace him on purpose because he cared for her. Though she’d never get an answer to the question, she’d later begin to view the old bandit somewhat as a father figure.
Since that night, Rosaria became a full-fledged member of the band of outlaws, but they wouldn’t last for long. They were soon wiped out by the Knights of Favonius in Genshin Impact. Rosaria, being the youngest in the group, was taken to Grand Master Varka, and he took her to Mondstadt. There, he urged her to go to the Church of Favonius and live a normal life. Rosaria would take his advice — at least, to some extent.

The Worst Nun in Genshin Impact
The benevolent Church of Favonius took Rosaria in and started educating her to be a nun. Unfortunately, Rosaria wasn’t as eager about the prospect as the other sisters were. She constantly skipped classes and hymnals, doing all that she could to get away from her supposed holy duties. While the other sisters resigned themselves to Rosaria’s unorthodox behavior, Sister Barbara of Genshin Impact never quite gave up. This earned her the ire of the former outlaw, who referred to her as “a thorn in her side.”
Whenever Rosaria managed to get away from church duties, she’d be smoking, drinking at a tavern, or even scaling the walls of the city to bathe in the sunlight. She sometimes interacted with other people in Mondstadt — Genshin Impact’s Cavalry Captain Kaeya being a prime example. However, she always kept them at arm’s length, preferring to stay by herself. Then there are days when she’d disappear without a trace. No one, not even the sisters, would know where to find her, and the strange nun would only reappear after a few days had passed.
The Shadow in Light
Rosaria’s neglect of church duties in Genshin Impact has gotten her in trouble more than once. Though, surprisingly, she’s still officially a nun at the Church of Favonius. She and the other sisters settled this matter early on, not long after she arrived in Mondstadt and started shirking her responsibilities. The sisters sat her down and simply asked if she had any intention of working for the church, to which Rosaria replied that she did not and that she’d found “other work.”
Upon learning of what this “other work” was, the Church of Favonius allowed Rosaria to continue what she was doing — and under the organization’s protection, at that. This was because Rosaria’s work in Genshin Impact involved her protecting Mondstadt. On days when she’d disappear, Rosaria would be shadowing suspicious personalities, shady merchants, and really anyone who might pose as threats to Mondstadt. If need be, she even interrogates these people. Should they prove to be a threat, she simply gets rid of them.
Though her methods are vicious and brutal, Rosaria believes them to be just. After all, a city like Mondstadt, which is “fortunate enough to be boring,” needs someone to handle the dirty work. And she’s just the person for the job — the shadow in light. Moreover, the church of Mondstadt is directly tied to the Knights of Favonius. So, Acting Grand Master Jean of Genshin Impact is likely aware and maybe even supportive of Rosaria’s ways.
Rosaria does all this as an unorthodox way of thanking the city of Mondstadt. Had it not been for its central tenet of freedom, she may not have ended up there in the first place. Grand Master Varka may not have been allowed to bring her back with him, and she might not have had the freedom to start anew. Nonetheless, Genshin Impact’s Rosaria didn’t want to do away with her former self completely — that is, the Rosaria that was a bandit. So, she took a part of it with her into her new, “normal” life and used it to protect the city that welcomed her.
Genshin Impact is available now for PC, PS4, PS5, and mobile devices. A Switch version is in development.
