There’s a number of reasons that players might want to collect Luminescent Spines from fireflies, but one of the more obvious ones is their use in crafting portable waypoints. For each portable waypoint Genshin Impact players want to craft, they will need two Luminescent Spines along with some other things.

Another use for Luminescent Spines comes from Genshin Impact’s ongoing event, Mimi Tomo. This event sees players working together with Hilichurls to track down a specific Unusual Hilichurl. Before they will give the player a clue, players have to complete a request. If the Hilichurl asks for Celi Lata, this is a phrase that refers to things that give off light but not heat. Small Lamp Grass works to fulfill this request, but players can also give them a Luminescent Spine instead.

As long as the player is searching at night time, fireflies will have a chance to spawn. They should be easy to spot since they glow brightly in the night, but capturing them isn’t always as easy. If the player sprints towards a firefly it will disappear and they won’t be able to harvest it, so players have to walk up to the firefly instead. What’s more, players can spawn a firefly sometimes by hitting bushes at night, but they will need to be quick about harvesting them. The attack animation just like running may cause the firefly to disappear before the player gets the Luminescent Spine they are after.

Typically speaking, fireflies will have a higher chance of spawning in grassy areas, so avoid the mountainous regions of Liyue if possible. That said, players shouldn’t have any issue finding these bugs assuming they are looking at night and remembering not to run to capture them. Other than the two uses listed above, Fireflies don’t seem to serve any other purpose.

Genshin Impact is available now on Mobile, PC, and PS4, and later on Switch.
